What does an orthopaedic specialist do?
An orthopaedic specialist diagnoses congenital or functional problems of the musculoskeletal system, from infections to sports injuries, fractures, joint problems, osteoporosis and bone tumours. When needed they can also operate, including complex procedures such as hip replacement.
Which conditions does an orthopaedic specialist treat?
The conditions most often treated by an orthopaedic specialist include:
- shoulder problems: subacromial impingement, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, dislocated shoulder, osteoarthritis;
- knee problems: osteoarthritis, meniscal tears, cartilage damage, anterior cruciate ligament injuries, patellofemoral syndrome;
- hip problems: osteoarthritis;
- hand problems: carpal tunnel syndrome;
- foot problems: bunions (hallux valgus);
- fractures;
- scoliosis;
- back pain;
- sprains;
Which procedures does an orthopaedic specialist use most?
Before considering surgery, the orthopaedic specialist tries, where possible, to solve the problem with less invasive approaches, such as medication or specific injections, rehabilitation or physiotherapy. When these treatments are no longer enough to control the symptoms, surgery may become necessary.
When should you see an orthopaedic specialist?
If you have problems with your back, shoulders, hips, knees or ankles,
with symptoms such as:
- pain in the muscles, tendons or joints that lasts over time;
- joint pain
making simple tasks difficult, such as climbing stairs or carrying shopping bags; - swelling or bruising around the joints or after an injury;
- limited movement, for example difficulty keeping your back straight
or joint deformities; - signs of infection such as inflammation and warmth in the affected area, fever and redness
or any unusual symptom in a painful part of the body.
