Endocrinology
The Endocrinology clinic at CalatafimiMed studies and treats diseases of the endocrine system and of the organs regulated by hormones.
In particular it treats conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid glands, endocrine pancreas, adrenal glands, male and female gonads and the hypothalamic-pituitary region, with specific reference to tumours of the sellar region and the pituitary gland (neuroendocrine conditions).
Another important area of study and clinical work is neuroendocrine tumours, a group of tumours of varying malignancy that can secrete hormones and neuropeptides (NETs).
Of great social importance and clinical impact is the study and treatment of bone disease, with particular reference to osteopenia and osteoporosis in men and above all in women, both before and after the menopause.

Which conditions does the endocrinologist treat?
Diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid glands, endocrine pancreas, adrenal glands, male and female gonads and the hypothalamic-pituitary region, neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) and bone disease, in particular osteopenia and osteoporosis before and after the menopause.
Which services are available?
First and follow-up endocrinology visits, a visit with thyroid ultrasound, thyroid fine needle aspiration, first and follow-up visits for osteoporosis, as well as the thyroid package (visit, follow-up and thyroid ultrasound).
What should I bring to the visit?
Recent blood tests (for the thyroid, for example TSH, FT3 and FT4), any previous ultrasound scans or reports and a list of the medication you are taking. Hormone tests can also be carried out in the centre’s own laboratory.
What is a thyroid fine needle aspiration?
It is an outpatient procedure, guided by ultrasound, in which a few cells are taken from a thyroid nodule with a fine needle for cytological examination. It takes a few minutes and is generally well tolerated.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. A GP referral is not needed for a private specialist visit: you only need to book. Please bring any tests you have already had, previous reports and a list of the medication you are taking.
Do you also treat osteoporosis?
Yes. There are dedicated osteoporosis visits and, for diagnosis and monitoring, bone densitometry (DXA) can be carried out at the centre.
