Clinical significance
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) regulates folliculogenesis in the female ovary. Serum AMH has been proposed as a test of ovarian reserve: a fall to very low levels correlates with a reduced number of ovarian follicles, while an abnormal rise correlates with an excess of follicles at a very early stage of maturation, as in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Unlike other ovarian reserve tests, such as FSH and oestradiol, which must be measured in the very first days of the cycle, AMH remains constant throughout all phases of the menstrual cycle and in pregnancy, so it can be measured at any time.

Clinical indications
Useful in identifying conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome and primary ovarian insufficiency.

Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.

Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed. You must have been standing or sitting upright for at least 30 minutes.
