Clinical significance
The enzyme creatine phosphokinase is found mainly in heart and skeletal muscle and, to a lesser extent, in the brain; it plays a key role in the cell’s energy balance, catalysing the exchange of phosphate between creatine and ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the energy source most used by cells
A rise in serum CPK is specifically caused by cell damage in the heart or muscles.
Clinical indications
Suspected myocardial infarction, suspected muscle injury, monitoring of muscular dystrophy.
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed. You must have been standing or sitting upright for at least 30 minutes.
