Clinical significance
Chorionic gonadotrophin is produced by the placenta and extends the life of the corpus luteum in early pregnancy; it can already be detected in the serum 8-10 days after fertilisation, and shortly afterwards in the urine. In a pregnant woman’s serum the amount of hCG rises exponentially, doubling every 2 days.
Raised hCG can be found in germ cell tumours of the testicle and in some non-trophoblastic cancers (ovary, cervix, gut, lung).

Clinical indications
Confirmation of pregnancy

Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
