Clinical significance
Testing serum for antibodies to Legionella pneumophila is useful only for epidemiological purposes, as they appear 4 to 6 weeks after the symptoms of infection begin. For early diagnosis of infection, Legionella pneumophila antigen must be tested for in the urine.
Clinical indications
Respiratory infections (suspected Legionella).
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for 12 hours; a small amount of water is allowed. You must have been standing or sitting upright for at least 30 minutes.
