Clinical significance
Adrenal antibodies are IgG antibodies directed against the microsomes of adrenal cortex cells. This test is used in the diagnosis of Addison’s disease (autoimmune adrenocortical insufficiency), in which they are present in 50-70% of cases. These antibodies are also found in autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (pancreas, thyroid, ovary).
Clinical indications
Suspected Addison’s disease, suspected autoimmune polyglandular syndrome.
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed.
Notes
Testing for these antibodies can be used in the differential diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency between the autoimmune form and infectious (TB, fungal infections) or neoplastic forms.
