CSF flow study
A CSF flow study is an MRI examination that assesses the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.
Using dedicated sequences synchronised with the heartbeat, the direction and speed of CSF flow can be measured at key points along its pathway, such as the cerebral aqueduct and the junction between the skull and the cervical spine.
What it is used for
- assessment of hydrocephalus, particularly normal pressure hydrocephalus;
- Chiari malformation and syringomyelia;
- suspected narrowing of the cerebral aqueduct;
- checking the function of CSF shunts or endoscopic third ventriculostomy;
- further investigation of symptoms such as walking difficulties, exertional headache or memory problems, as advised by the specialist.
How the test is carried out
The test is performed like a standard brain MRI, with additional sequences designed to study flow (known as phase-contrast sequences). To synchronise the images with the cardiac cycle, a small sensor is placed on a finger or a few electrodes on the chest.
You lie still on the couch; contrast medium is not normally needed. The test is painless and uses no ionising radiation.
Preparation and precautions
No special preparation is needed. The usual MRI safety rules apply: before the scan you fill in a questionnaire and must tell us about pacemakers, implanted electronic devices, clips, prostheses or metal fragments, claustrophobia and any possible pregnancy.
On the day, remove metal objects, jewellery and magnetic cards. Please bring your referral and any previous MRI or CT scans for comparison.
