Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic exam that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the structures inside the body. Your doctor will prescribe it when a clear, precise view of soft tissue, internal organs, joints or the nervous system is needed. These are some of the cases in which an MRI scan may be necessary:

• Assessment of persistent pain or abnormalities: if a patient has chronic or persistent pain that cannot be explained by other exams, such as ultrasound or X-rays, an MRI scan may be indicated for a more thorough investigation. This is common for persistent back pain, joint pain or neck pain that does not improve with initial treatment.

• Study of the central nervous system: MRI is particularly useful for examining the brain and spinal cord. It is often prescribed to investigate symptoms such as recurring headaches, dizziness, balance problems, visual disturbances or seizures, or to assess neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or brain tumours.

• Muscle, tendon and joint injuries: in case of trauma, injury or pain in muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints, MRI provides a detailed view of these structures. It is often indicated for problems of the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip or spine. For example, it is useful for diagnosing cruciate ligament injuries in the knee or rotator cuff injuries in the shoulder.

• Monitoring and diagnosis of tumours: MRI can be used to identify and monitor tumours in various organs, such as the brain, liver, kidneys and pelvis. It distinguishes between normal and abnormal tissue, assesses the size and position of a mass and helps plan the most suitable treatment.

• Assessment of the heart and blood vessels: in cardiology, MRI can be used to obtain detailed images of the heart, blood vessels and arteries. It is useful for assessing the health of the heart muscle, diagnosing congenital malformations and monitoring conditions such as aneurysms or ischaemia.

• Pre-operative assessment: in some situations an MRI scan may be requested before surgery to obtain a detailed map of the area to be treated. This helps the surgeon plan the operation precisely and reduce risks during the procedure.

MRI is a very safe exam that uses no ionising radiation and offers excellent image resolution. However, as it takes longer than other diagnostic techniques, it is prescribed when there is a real need for information that other exams cannot provide.
