Radiology
Radiology is one of the most important branches of diagnostic imaging and uses X-rays to examine bones, joints and several internal organs quickly and effectively.

What is it and how does it work?
Radiology uses low dose ionising radiation that passes through the body and produces black and white images on a digital detector.
The density of the different tissues (bones, muscles, organs) determines how intense the image is: bones appear white, while soft tissues and air look darker.
Thanks to technological progress, radiology today uses the latest generation of digital equipment, which keeps the radiation dose to a minimum while producing very sharp, detailed images.
Why is it useful?
An X-ray is often the first diagnostic step in many clinical situations. It is useful to:

Preparing for the test
Most X-rays require no particular preparation: you will simply be asked to remove metal objects (jewellery, belts, buttons).
Only in specific cases (for example X-rays with contrast medium) are special instructions needed, and these are given before the examination.

Which X-rays can I have?
Chest, skeletal (fractures, joint pain), spine, pelvis and hip and abdominal X-rays, with the latest generation of digital equipment.
Is any preparation needed?
Most X-rays need no preparation: you will simply be asked to remove metal objects such as jewellery, belts or buttons. Only for particular examinations, for example with contrast medium, will you receive specific instructions beforehand.
Are X-rays safe?
Yes. Modern digital equipment keeps the radiation dose to a minimum while producing sharp, detailed images; the examination is quick, painless and short.
How long does it take and when do I get the report?
The examination takes a few minutes. The report for digital X-rays is delivered within 24 hours and can be collected at the centre or downloaded online from Referti Web.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
Yes. Tests that use X-rays require a referral from a doctor (your GP or a specialist, private practice included) stating the examination and the clinical question. Please also bring any previous tests for comparison.
