Colour Doppler ultrasound

Colour Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test that combines conventional ultrasound with the Doppler effect, making it possible to study both the anatomy and the blood flow of arteries and veins. It is a safe, painless technique with no radiation, which provides valuable information about the health of the circulatory system.

What is it and how does it work

Colour Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the blood vessels and, thanks to Doppler technology, shows the speed and direction of the blood inside them.
The images are colour coded (red and blue), so the doctor can easily spot any abnormality or obstruction to normal circulation.

Why is it useful

This test is essential for the prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of vascular disease. It makes it possible to:

  • detect atherosclerotic plaques or narrowing (stenosis);

  • diagnose venous thrombosis or venous insufficiency (varicose veins);

  • assess the risk of stroke by examining the carotid arteries;

  • monitor vascular bypasses or stents already in place;

  • analyse the peripheral circulation of the arms and legs;

  • check how the venous system works in patients with swelling or oedema.

Types of colour Doppler ultrasound

Depending on the area to be examined, colour Doppler ultrasound can be used for different parts of the body:

  • Carotid and vertebral (supra-aortic) Doppler: examines the carotid and vertebral arteries to prevent stroke.

  • Arterial Doppler of the legs/arms: assesses arterial circulation and any blockages.

  • Venous Doppler of the legs/arms: useful to diagnose venous thrombosis or chronic venous insufficiency.

  • Abdominal Doppler: analyses flow and the main vessels such as the aorta, renal and hepatic arteries.

Benefits for the patient

  • A quick, painless and non-invasive examination.
  • No radiation: it can be repeated with no risk.

  • Immediate, reliable results.

  • Essential both for early diagnosis and for monitoring treatment.

  • Widely used in many fields (angiology, cardiology, vascular surgery, neurology).

Preparing for the test

  • In most cases colour Doppler ultrasound requires no particular preparation. Only for abdominal scans may fasting for a few hours be recommended, to obtain sharper images.
