Physiatry
The new Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) clinic at CalatafimiMed works on the recovery of physical and cognitive function and of activities, including behaviour and participation, and quality of life.
The physiatrist deals with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of people of all ages with disabling medical conditions.
The clinic treats patients with acute or chronic conditions, with particular experience in neurological, musculoskeletal, urological, cardiorespiratory and lymphovascular problems, amputations and disability caused by chronic pain and cancer. Specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation use specific assessment tools and provide medication and injection treatments, therapeutic exercise and instrumental physical therapy, manual medicine, prevention and education.
Physiatrist or orthopaedic specialist: what is the difference?
The two specialists often overlap for some conditions, but they are not the same. The physiatrist mainly deals with functional recovery after an event (for example orthopaedic or trauma surgery) or with chronic problems that have no surgical solution, through physiotherapy. The orthopaedic specialist, on the other hand, treats diseases of the bones and joints with medical, surgical or rehabilitative treatment, and often “hands over” the patient to the physiatrist for post-operative rehabilitation, or refers them before surgery for muscle strengthening, which makes both the operation and recovery easier.
Yet the two roles are distinct, with quite different tasks. One element above all helps tell them apart: the physiatrist steps in after orthopaedic or trauma surgery, or treats the patient’s chronic problems; the orthopaedic specialist deals with the typical problems of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves).
Thanks to their broad training, physiatrists are qualified to lead the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team towards the best possible outcome.
