Complete abdominal ultrasound
Complete abdominal ultrasound
A complete abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test that examines the abdominal area using ultrasound emitted by a probe placed on the skin.
What can a complete abdominal ultrasound detect?
This scan allows the doctor to see the internal organs of the abdomen in real time and assess their health.
It can examine: the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, aorta, bladder and internal reproductive organs such as the uterus, ovaries or prostate.
To examine other structures such as the testicles, a specific dedicated scan is needed.
How is the scan carried out and how long does it take?
A complete abdominal ultrasound takes about 15-20 minutes. The patient lies on their back and the doctor applies a clear gel to the abdomen, then moves the probe over the skin to obtain ultrasound images, which appear immediately on a screen.
During the procedure the patient may be asked to change position to give a better view of some organs.
How do I prepare for the ultrasound?
In the days before the scan, we recommend a light diet, avoiding heavy meals. You also need to fast for at least 6 hours before the ultrasound. Unless your doctor says otherwise, do not stop any medication you are taking.
What should I eat in the days before?
In the 2-3 days before the appointment, a diet low in fat and fibre is recommended. Some examples of suitable foods:
– White pasta or rice with extra virgin olive oil
– Grilled white meat
– Oven-baked oily fish
Foods to avoid:
– Cured meats and red meat
– Dairy products and milk
– Sugary drinks and coffee
– Vegetables, fruit (especially unpeeled) and legumes should be limited to prevent bloating.
The day before the scan, it is best to eat:
– Fish or white meat
– Peeled fruit
Avoid instead:
– Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes
– Vegetables and legumes
– Cheese, milk and dairy products
– Fizzy drinks and coffee
How much water should I drink before the scan?
To ensure the bladder can be seen clearly, we recommend drinking at least one litre of still water in the hour before the appointment and not urinating for about two hours before the scan.
Who can have this scan?
A complete abdominal ultrasound is suitable for everyone and has no contraindications.
Is an abdominal ultrasound painful or risky?
No, it is a safe and painless test. The ultrasound waves used do not cause any damage to body tissues.
