Clinical significance
In immune haemolytic anaemias, red blood cells have antibodies or complement fractions attached to their membrane; the direct Coombs test detects them by agglutinating the cells with antibodies against human antibodies and/or complement.

Suspected haemolytic anaemia
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed.
