Clinical significance
Gastrin is a hormone produced by the endocrine G cells of the gastric antrum and the first part of the duodenum; its role is to stimulate the cells of the stomach lining to secrete hydrochloric acid and pepsin. Gastrin secretion is inhibited by excess hydrochloric acid and promoted by peptides and amino acids.
Clinical indications
Suspected Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed.
