Clinical significance
Lactate is the product of glucose metabolism under anaerobic conditions and is broken down by the liver and kidneys.
Clinical indications
It is usually used in hospitals.
Sample type
The patient must have a blood sample taken.
Preparation
You must fast for at least 8 hours; a small amount of water is allowed. You must have been standing or sitting upright for at least 30 minutes. Avoid prolonged exercise in the hours before the sample is collected.
Notes
It rises after intense exercise because of a relative lack of oxygen.
