Clinical significance
Mycoplasmas are microorganisms that colonise the genital tract, often without symptoms, especially in women, in whom they rarely cause cervicitis and even more rarely salpingitis; in men they can cause urethritis (most non-gonococcal urethritis) and, more rarely, epididymitis and prostatitis.
Clinical indications
Genital tract infections.
Sample type
Testing on urethral or cervical swabs (vaginal in women who have had a hysterectomy), urine and semen.
Preparation
Unless your doctor specifically requests otherwise, it is advisable not to have the test while taking antibiotics. Allow at least 7 days after the last dose of antibiotic.
