Computed tomography (CT)
Computed tomography (CT) is an imaging test that uses X-rays to produce cross-sectional images of the body, with far more detail than a conventional X-ray. The images can be reconstructed on several planes and in 3D, allowing the doctor to study organs, bones, blood vessels and soft tissues precisely.
The test is quick and painless: the scan itself usually takes just a few minutes.
What it is used for
- chest and lung imaging (nodules, infections, emphysema);
- assessment of the abdomen and pelvis (liver, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, bowel);
- bones and joints, especially complex fractures and injuries;
- the brain, paranasal sinuses and spine;
- blood vessels (CT angiography);
- staging and follow-up of cancer.
How the test is carried out
You lie on a couch that moves slowly through a ring-shaped opening, where the X-ray tube rotates around the body. During the scan it is important to keep still and, when asked, to hold your breath for a few seconds.
In some cases the doctor prescribes the scan with contrast medium: an iodine-based agent injected into a vein that makes vessels and organs stand out more clearly. During the injection you may feel a warm sensation that passes within moments.
Preparation and precautions
A CT scan without contrast usually needs no preparation. If contrast medium is planned, you will usually need to:
- fast for a few hours beforehand, as instructed;
- bring a recent creatinine blood test to check kidney function;
- tell us about any allergies, especially to medicines or to contrast media used in the past;
- tell us if you take medication for diabetes (such as metformin) or have kidney or thyroid disease.
CT uses ionising radiation: it is performed only on a doctor’s referral, and you must always tell us if you are or might be pregnant. Please bring your referral and any previous scans; detailed instructions are given when you book.
