Virtual colonoscopy
Virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) is an imaging test that examines the colon with a low-dose CT scan, without inserting an endoscope.
Software processes the images and reconstructs the inside of the bowel in 2D and 3D, allowing the radiologist to detect polyps and other changes in the bowel wall.
What it is used for
- examining the colon when conventional colonoscopy is incomplete or not possible;
- older or frail patients, or those on anticoagulants, for whom endoscopy is more difficult;
- assessing the colon when a narrowing prevents the endoscope from passing;
- an alternative for people who cannot have a conventional colonoscopy, as advised by their doctor.
Virtual colonoscopy does not allow biopsies or polyp removal: if any lesions are found, the doctor will recommend a conventional colonoscopy.
How the test is carried out
You lie on the CT couch and the colon is gently inflated with air or carbon dioxide through a small, thin rectal tube. Two short scans are then taken, usually lying on your back and on your front, holding your breath for a few seconds.
The whole test takes about 15–20 minutes, requires no sedation and you can return to your normal activities straight away. You may feel bloated while the colon is inflated, but this passes quickly.
Preparation and precautions
Virtual colonoscopy also requires a clean bowel. The preparation, usually less demanding than for conventional colonoscopy, generally includes:
- a low-fibre diet in the days before;
- a laxative and, often, an oral contrast agent that “tags” any remaining stool;
- telling us about allergies, current medication and any possible pregnancy, as the test uses ionising radiation.
Detailed instructions are provided when you book. Please bring your referral and any previous tests.
