Musculoskeletal or muscle and tendon ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses an ultrasound probe to show muscles and tendons in detail.
What is this type of ultrasound for?
This scan helps identify conditions of the muscles and tendons. It is particularly recommended for strains, suspected muscle tears, bruises, tendinitis, cysts and haematomas, both under the skin and in the muscles.
It can target different areas of the body, including: shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, trochanteric area, pubis, thigh, knee, leg, ankle and foot (forefoot, midfoot and hindfoot) and muscles.
How is the muscle and tendon scan carried out?
The procedure usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. The doctor applies a clear gel to the area and uses an ultrasound probe to obtain real-time images on a monitor. The scan is done directly on the skin, with no incisions or invasive instruments.
Is any particular preparation needed?
You only need to remove any bandages, strapping or dressings from the area to be examined. No other preparation is needed.
Is a muscle and tendon ultrasound painful or risky?
The scan is completely safe and risk-free. It is not painful, but if the area is inflamed the probe may cause slight discomfort.
