Paediatric ultrasound
Paediatric ultrasound is an essential diagnostic test to monitor the development and wellbeing of children. It is a safe, non-invasive and painless technique that uses ultrasound to obtain detailed images of internal organs, without radiation.
When is it recommended?
In the first months and years of life, identifying any abnormality or problem in time is essential to act early and ensure healthy growth. Ultrasound is a valuable tool to diagnose abdominal, kidney, joint and muscle problems with no risk for the child.
It is particularly suitable because it is well tolerated by young patients and needs no complex preparation. In many cases a parent can stay with the child during the scan, creating a reassuring, relaxed setting. It also allows regular monitoring over time, especially useful for children with chronic conditions or who need regular follow-up. Because it can be repeated with no risk to the child’s health, it is a valuable way to follow how any condition develops.
Which paediatric ultrasound scans can you book with us?
Complete abdominal ultrasound
Paediatric abdominal ultrasound assesses organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, bladder and bowel. It is recommended in case of:
✔ Frequent tummy ache
✔ Reflux or digestive problems
✔ Recurrent urinary infections
✔ Suspected liver or kidney problems
This scan makes it possible to rule out or promptly diagnose conditions such as kidney stones, urinary tract malformations or bowel problems.
Newborn hip ultrasound
Hip ultrasound is recommended in the first months of life to diagnose developmental dysplasia of the hip, a condition that, if not treated early, can lead to mobility problems. The scan is:
✔ Recommended between the 4th and 8th week of life
✔ Essential for newborns with risk factors (breech birth, family history, twins)
✔ Painless and quick, with immediate results
If diagnosed in time, dysplasia can be treated conservatively, avoiding surgery in the future.
