Welcome to the new Diabetology clinic at CalatafimiMed: our diabetologist looks after patients with diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes is a condition that alters the metabolism of carbohydrates, causing a chronic rise in blood sugar.
The clinic cares for patients with both type 1 (insulin-dependent) and type 2 diabetes, and aims to identify, monitor and treat patients at risk who have abnormal fasting blood sugar levels.
The clinic aims for a timely diagnosis, identifying people with risk factors for diabetes in order to reduce the risk of the complications that can develop when high blood sugar persists, for example heart, nerve and vascular complications and problems with the eyes, kidneys and sexual function.
Together with our nutritionist, the specialist prescribes a personalised diet as part of the treatment and monitors the patient regularly.
Diagnosis is supported not only by the specialist consultation but also by our analysis laboratory, which quickly provides the data needed to assess the patient.

Frequently asked questions about Diabetology
Who can come to the diabetology clinic?
People with type 1 (insulin-dependent) and type 2 diabetes, but also anyone with abnormal fasting blood sugar or risk factors for diabetes, for a timely diagnosis.
What does a diabetology visit include?
A clinical assessment and review of risk factors, setting up monitoring and treatment and, together with our nutritionist, a personalised diet with regular check-ups.
Are blood tests done at the centre?
Yes. Our own analysis laboratory quickly provides the data needed to assess the patient (blood sugar, glycated haemoglobin and any other tests requested by the specialist).
Which complications can be prevented?
Uncontrolled chronic high blood sugar can cause heart, nerve and vascular complications and problems with the eyes, kidneys and sexual function: early care is exactly what reduces this risk.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. A GP referral is not needed for a private specialist visit: you only need to book. Please bring any tests you have already had, previous reports and a list of the medication you are taking.
