Echocardiography
Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses ultrasound to obtain detailed images of the heart as it beats.
It is essential to assess the structure and function of the heart, giving valuable information about the heart chambers, the valves and how well the heart muscle contracts.
What is it and how does it work
During the examination an ultrasound probe is placed on the chest after applying a conductive gel.
The ultrasound waves are reflected by the structures of the heart and turned into images on the monitor, so that the cardiologist can analyse their size, shape and movement.
In some cases the examination is combined with colour Doppler, which shows the blood flow through the valves and heart chambers in real time.
Why is it useful
Echocardiography is a very important diagnostic tool because it can:

assess the size of the heart chambers and the thickness of their walls;

analyse the heart’s pumping function (ejection fraction);

study the shape and function of the heart valves;

identify murmurs, valve stenosis or regurgitation;

diagnose cardiomyopathies, pericarditis or pericardial effusion;

monitor patients with chronic conditions or with prosthetic valves;
-
check the effects of drug or surgical treatment.
Types of echocardiography
Depending on the clinical need, different versions of the examination can be carried out:

Transthoracic echocardiography: the most common, performed with the probe placed on the chest.

Transoesophageal echocardiography: with a probe passed into the oesophagus for more detailed images.

Stress echocardiography: during physical or drug-induced stress, to assess how the heart responds.

Contrast echocardiography: in particular cases, to show the heart chambers and blood flow more clearly.
Preparing for the test
Echocardiography requires no particular preparation.
Only for transoesophageal or stress echocardiography may specific instructions be needed; the cardiologist will give them to you before the examination.
