Polysomnography

Polysomnography is a non-invasive diagnostic test that records and analyses in detail the physiological parameters during sleep.
It is the reference test for diagnosing sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), chronic snoring and other abnormalities of breathing or brain activity at night.

What is it and how does it work

During the test the patient is connected to a portable device that records several parameters while they sleep, including:

  • brain activity (electroencephalogram);

  • eye and muscle movements;

  • heart rate and electrocardiogram;

  • blood oxygen saturation;

  • airflow and chest movements.

The test can be carried out in a sleep laboratory or, in some cases, at home with portable devices.

Why is it useful

Polysomnography is essential to:

  • diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA);

  • tell simple snoring apart from more serious breathing disorders;

  • assess the quality of sleep and identify abnormal night-time awakenings;

  • monitor patients with heart and lung conditions associated with breathing disorders;

  • plan targeted treatment such as CPAP, dental splints or surgery.

Benefits for the patient

  • A non-invasive, safe and painless test.

  • It analyses sleep in a complete and scientific way.

  • It gives an accurate diagnosis of breathing and neurological sleep disorders.

  • It guides the choice of the most suitable treatment.

  • It helps reduce the cardiovascular risks linked to sleep apnoea.

Preparing for the test

Polysomnography requires no particular preparation. We recommend that you:

  • keep to your usual routine in the days before;

  • avoid caffeine, alcohol and sleeping pills before the test (unless your doctor says otherwise);

  • wear comfortable clothes during the monitoring.
